3-WEEK CUMULATIVE CLASSES:

Song Accompaniment for Fiddlers with Isa Burke
Tuesdays: February 3, 10, and 17, 6:30-8PM Eastern

The fiddle is an amazing instrument for accompanying singers, but many players who come from a background of playing fiddle tunes can get freaked out when trying to figure out what to play when they can't play the melody! This class will dive into song accompaniment techniques like playing fills, playing chords, improvising, staying out of a singer's way, and using your fiddle to enhance the feeling of a song. We'll talk about how to use these skills both on the fly in a jam session, and in arranging a song for a performance or recording. Hopefully, you'll leave the class a stronger side musician who can accompany songs in a variety of styles!

Open Tuned World with James Paul Mitchell
Wednesdays: February 4, 11, and 18, 6:30-8PM Eastern

Whether you’re looking for inspiration in your songwriting on the guitar, or to find a whole new way to interpret songs you already play, open tunings are a powerful tool. Each day we will explore the world of a different open tuning, looking at the musical language contained within. See how artists like Neil Young, Big Thief, and Joni Mitchell use open tunings to create their signature sounds, and how you can use them to create your own unique sonic landscapes.

Coaching Your Creative Self with Emily Mure
Thursdays: February 5, 12, and 19, 6:30-8PM Eastern

This three-session class is a guided exploration of what becomes possible when we treat our creativity and ourselves with love, curiosity, and spaciousness.  Each day centers on a different theme, including relaxing into the Loving Self and growing through community.

Through guided journaling, reflections, visualization exercises, and group conversations, we’ll work with the real challenges we face as creatives, such as comparison, self-doubt, creative “blocks”, and the desire to “fix” ourselves instead of growing. You’ll learn practical tools drawn from coaching, psychology, and mindfulness to help you ease the mind, soften the inner critic, and support your creative self in moving towards what matters with greater clarity and joy.

This is a space to slow down, reconnect with what you love, honor the gifts you bring into the world, and to remember that we grow more easily when we grow together.

For over a decade, Certified Creative Coach Emily Mure has supported artists of all kinds in building more meaningful, sustainable, and creatively fulfilling lives.

Old-Time Fiddle Workshop with Rayna Gellert
Sunday, February 8, 2PM Eastern

Pile in for a special online old-time fiddle workshop! I’ll be breaking down a cool Kentucky tune—Brushy Fork of John’s Creek—and using it as our jumping off point for more general fiddle discussion. The plan is for this to be fun for both old-time fiddlers AND old-time-curious players. To make it accessible for other flavors of fiddlers/violinists, we’ll be cross tuning to GDGD—instead of AEAE—so it’s not so scary.

The version I’ll teach will be mostly based on Art Stamper’s.

LISTEN TO ART STAMPER PLAY BRUSHY FORK of john's creek

Arrangement 101 with Zachariah Hickman
Sunday, February 15, 1PM Eastern

Do you find the prospect of arranging music for strings or horns, or other larger ensembles, to be a mystifying and daunting prospect?  Come and chat with Zachariah about learning some tips and tricks (spoiler alert: there are no tricks).  Zack has written and performed more than 100 songs for string quartet, including many for instructors at MOM!  This workshop will address concepts and approaches to filling out your arrangements - no instruments needed, but this conversation will move at a fast/very fast pace.

A Brief Opinionated History of Bluegrass with Maddie Witler
Sunday, February 22, 1PM Eastern

A discussion of how bluegrass came to be, how it differs from old time or country music, how the jamming culture came about, how sub genres like “mash” and “newgrass” came about. Some thoughts on gender, race, and class in bluegrass and what we can do to keep it relevant in the future.
