ISLAND CAMP 2025

Hi there!

It’s me, Kristin. Feel free to scroll on down if you want to get right to the staff list. Or hang out with me here for a minute, as a I ponder what might make this year on the island a little new or notable.

One thing that strikes me is that we have a veritable PACK of banjo players joining us. I’m thinking of Tray Wellington and his three-finger banjo compositions. Also, my dear friend and Uncle Earl bandmate Abigail Washburn and her lovely clawhammer touch. And Brad Kolodner is coming back after we learned last year that we can't imagine our morning "Coffee & Tender Tunes" without him. We have so many banjos, in fact, that Jonathan Vocke (also a great banjo player) is going to focus on teaching the fiddle. So bring your five-strings or tell your banjo-playing buddies that this is their year.

Another thing I see is a strong singing and songwriting program. For instance, Paola Vera is a wildly over-qualified vocal teacher who will be visiting us from her home in France. And Richa Sahay, a returning camper, has been talked into sharing a workshop based on her own background in Indian classical singing.

Then there’s Kyshona – back by popular demand, and hoping to focus on a songwriting class for the youth this time around. The galactically talented Elizabeth Ziman has been convinced to leave the dishrag in the kitchen so she can start sharing her mad skills with us. I'll be teaching songwriting myself after several years of not doing that. And then there's Abigail, Isa, Kelli, Dietrich, Maddie, Lauren, Dinty, Clara, Allie, and several other folks who come to mind... basically so many willing writing coaches and collaborators that I stopped listing “songwriter” after people’s names.

Along those lines, we're starting to build a program around teaching the practice of creativity itself. Emily Mure, a long-time camper, will be offering her professional skills as a Creative Coach. Allie Chip is back with morning yoga; Thomas Brown is back in the official Art Teacher role after a few years of retreating into the woodshop to sculpt solo bonfire offerings; and Richie Barshay and Tracy Einstein are sharing Alexander Technique and clown-based performance skills in their multi-faceted debut on the island. And speaking of holistic musicianship and communication skills, we’ll also be honoring the role of the “sideperson” in a brand new class taught by Lauren Balthrop.

One thing that's not changing this year is the depth of talent and groove in the house band, all under the leadership of Dr. Zachariah Hickman. He's got Isa & James & Dinty on guitars (plus…). Chris & Dietrich on horns, etc. Kevin & Richie on drums. Lauren & friends on bg vox. In case you don’t know, everything Zack touches turns to performance magic or mischief, or both.

And last but not least, Nelson Williams is coming back on bass, and Maddie Witler is coming back on mandolin. So you know what that means... the coffee shop has TWO BARISTAS. That's the new bar we’re setting, friends.

Those are some of the things I see as I look over this outsized list what’s coming to our tiny island this year. I hope you can make it!

With love,
Kristin Andreassen
Island Camp Artistic Director
