2018 Instructors
Island Camp 2018 StAFF
** If you’re looking for announcements about 2019 staff and instructors, stay tuned! We will be announcing those soon.
WELCOME!
Each year we choose a Traditional Music Focus and this year we're looking at North America. That's broad, we know, but with old time musicians hailing from Portland, Oregon to Lafayette, Louisiana to the Gaspé Peninsula of Québec -- North America it is! So please welcome Kaïa Kater on the clawhammer banjo, Sharon Leahy & Rick Good on guitar, more banjo, and clogging feet, and the incomparable Foghorn Stringband on all the rest of the instruments and the dance band grooves.
We've actually got even more purveyors of original and traditional Americana music on staff, including newbies Sam Gleaves and Sean Staples (who both happen to be among the most timelessly elegant songwriters we know). And then, coming all the way from Australia, we've snagged the thoroughly pop/folk duo Oh Pep!, along with their sometimes drummer and our dear old pal Sean Trischka.
In the "back by popular demand" category, we have Zachariah Hickman leading Band in a Box 8.0, while Kelley Anderson transforms her ad hoc "Gals & Gear" lunchtime session into a week-long exploration of "electricity" for the reputationally technophobic folk musician (of any gender -- including gals). Lauren Balthrop & Val Thompson will take their Youth Ensembles to the next level while Thomas Brown shares his sculptural skills with campers throughout the week (and not just when he sets his sculpture on fire). Maya de Vitry, Chris Miller, Adam Moss, Rennie Elliot, Dietrich Strause and Charlie Rose will carry on being their inspiring selves, while Lula Wiles promise to transform from campers to staff before our very eyes without losing an ounce of wiliness in the process.
As you read through these bios, we encourage you to check out the links and feast yourselves on the sounds you find there. You'll note that we call some people "Instructors" (meaning they teach about 3-4 classes/day) and some people "Guest Artists" (meaning they teach about 1-2 classes/day). While this distinction can give you some sense of how much you might expect to "formally" interact with a given musician on the island, you should know by now that we're all in it to win it and the best stuff will be colored outside the lines of the class schedule no matter how well we plan it.
That said, we're pretty proud of what we've schemed up for this year and we can't wait to share it with you. Thanks and love,
Kristin Andreassen & Laura Cortese
