Island Camp 2021 StAFF
WELCOME!
We are so grateful to be presenting a special event on our beloved island this year. Please enjoy reading about some of the brilliant music teachers, cooks, visual artists, boat drivers, dishwashers and coffee makers that we’ve invited to join us.
My long-time co-conspirator Laura Cortese had a baby in the fall, and since she lives in Belgium, she and baby Louise won’t be traveling to join us. Laura is very much with us in spirit, and we will send her love and receive it back.
This winter, I’ve been reminded about the depth of brilliance and dedication in this community. I would like to acknowledge the unending work of Zack Hickman, Lauren Balthrop, and Dinty Child, who promised and delivered hours and hours of work as we pieced together this unique event, on short notice, with Covid safety protocols as part of the puzzle.
Thanks to creative budgeting some truly generous financial support, we’ve been able to figure out how to host a half-size event that is still moving us toward our vision of inclusivity, sustainability, and joy for an expanding community of lifelong learners. We are honored to share a week with you in this transformative time. And for those who we weren’t able to accommodate this year, let’s see if we can work out the kinks so it will be an even better experience for you if we get to do this again!
With love,
Kristin

Mike Merenda is a songwriting force and clawhammer banjo explorer raised in NH and now dwelling in NY's Hudson Valley. Youthful musical forays into rock and punk later led to the more traditional folk realms and a productive creative partnership with his wife Ruth Ungar spanning 2 decades (so far.) They have toured extensively as both the duo Mike + Ruthy and the full band The Mammals. Mike curates the lineup of their community music festivals, the Winter Hoot and Summer Hoot at Ashokan. He is most fond of hoisting his antenna into the ether and seeing what emerges thru singing with a guitar or banjo in hand. In addition to his own original compositions he has recorded posthumous "co-writes" with Woody Guthrie & Allen Ginsberg. The Mammals' recent title track Sunshiner, which came to Mike in a dream, was nominated for Folk Alliance International's 2018 Song of the Year award. He attended Miles of Music's very first camp and is honored to be back.
After quitting her job in real estate five years ago, Naiika Sings bought a microphone and amplifier and took to performing on subway platforms and trains along the A, D and E lines. Her unplanned performances were based, she says, on the energy subway commuters were giving her that day.
Two years ago, a video of her posted by a rider on social media went viral as millions watched a packed train of commuters lose their inhibitions in a spontaneous sing-along. In other videos people danced in the aisles. When Naiika sings, said one post, magic happens.
In her forthcoming debut album, the Haitian-American singer-songwriter demonstrates to the world why her sultry mix of soul and style has already attracted the attention of millions, including 50 Cent, Ledisi, and many more.
A music therapist gone rogue, Kyshona Armstrong wrote her first songs with her patients as an exercise in self reflection. She is known as a strong voice for the underdog. NPR Music is quoted as saying “Wherever she plants her feet she does so with righteous conviction and a strong sense of her own voice.”.
When she’s home, Kyshona devotes her time to helping others write their story through song; working with those experiencing incarceration, homelessness and struggling with mental health. Of her latest project, “Listen”, No Depression says,“This is protest music for a new generation, a musical treatment for social ills, a unique prescription that only works if you listen.”
Ruth Ungar is a multi-dimensional collaborator, touring and recording artist, and event organizer based in the Hudson Valley of NY. In 2019 she and her husband Mike Merenda toured the US and UK with their band The Mammals, toured festivals for a month in Australia as Mike + Ruthy (duo) with their two kids, recorded a new full length studio album ‘Nonet' and organized their two annual community music festivals, the Winter Hoot & Summer Hoot at Ashokan. For 40 years Ruth's family has hosted summer traditional music and dance camps at Ashokan, the place that inspired her father, Jay Ungar, to compose his evocative fiddle melody Ashokan Farewell. Ruth is similarly known for eliciting an emotional response from an audience of any size. Her background in theater has also fueled a lifelong fascination with stagecraft, vulnerability, and the beauty of taking risks.
Ruby John is a Traditional Fiddler and a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Chippewa Indians from Northern Michigan. Ruby learned to fiddle the traditional way by ear, listening to and learning from experienced fiddlers while attending OFMA Jamborees (Old-Time Michigan Fiddlers Association), TC Celtic Sessions, Algomatrad Traditional Music and Dance camp (St. Joseph Island ON), Elder Youth Legacy Métis Collective and Bluegrass Festivals. Ruby has performed her traditional fiddling throughout the US and Canada and looks forward to sharing this music she loves with others.
Watch her play on Quarantine Happy Hour.

Vocal powerhouse Rachael Price is a legend in the making. The lead singer of Lake Street Dive started her journey at a young age in international traveling choirs and jazz ensembles. While studying at New England Conservatory, Price met her fellow Lake Street Dive members. In May 2018 Lake Street Dive released the self-produced Free Yourself Up and has been busy touring in support of the album. On their rise to success over the past few years, they have sold out many of America's legendary venues, toured Europe and Australia, and made multiple national television appearances. During the band's downtime, Price is involved in a project with Vilray Bolles. With simple arrangements and only a guitar for accompaniment, Rachael & Vilray perform original works and revive forgotten gems of the jazz big bands and western swing ensembles. Their eponymous debut album, Rachael & Vilray, is out now on Nonesuch Records. Equal parts sass, gritty soul, and unfettered grace, Price has been called a “cool cannon blast of a voice” by Rolling Stone and continues to make fans from the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Mavis Staples, and Stephen Colbert.
Since his dream career of full-time musician and multi-instrumentalist in the bands the Faux Paws and the Revelers was ripped away last year, The Chris Miller has been making lots of coffee for himself. Now he’s vaccinated and is excited to make coffee for you too!
Celia Woodsmith is a GRAMMY Nominated performer, vocalist, and songwriter. Influenced by artists such as John Prine, Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, and Mahalia Jackson she has molded her own vocal style that can be described as "one of a kind: gritty, muscular, folksy and intimate sometimes all at once" (Bluegrass Situation). A fixture of the New England roots scene, she has been hailed by the Boston Globe as "Unvarnished and intimate (...) but then sounds like she's about to part the Dead Sea".
In the last 10 years, Celia has released six albums with Nashville based string band Della Mae. In 2014 Della Mae was nominated for a Best Bluegrass Album GRAMMY for their record "This World Oft Can Be". Their most recent album "Headlight" has been described as "...powerful writing, soaring vocals, and moving musical unity — challenge us, energize us, and touch us as they light the way. This is an album on which you can feel the emotions of the group in each song as they evoke anger, sadness, hopelessness, and joy". (No Depression)
The all-female Della Mae has performed in 19 countries with the US Department of State's cultural diplomacy program "American Music Abroad". Woodsmith spoke about her experiences with travel and music at TEDx Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, NH in a talk called "A Soft Drink and a Song in the Hills of Pakistan".
In 2016 Woodsmith took a hiatus from touring to write, listen, and reflect about her years on the road. With her husband she road-biked 1.700 miles from Geneva, Switzerland to Vlorë, Albania. In that time off she was able to write and record for her debut solo record "Cast Iron Shoes". The all original album combines raw, roots-rock with heart-searing songs like "Sicily" which paint a solemn picture of the global refugee crisis.
In March, 2020, Woodsmith found herself quarantined at her home in Kittery,ME. Off the road for the first time in 15 years, she has been focusing on writing, learning, teaching and rejuvenating her relationship with the outdoors.
As a person who grew up coming to Three Mile Island with her family in the summer time, Celia is a genuine “double agent” — equally familiar with the rhythms of the island with and without the Miles of Music people present!

Dietrich Strause is a multi-instrumentalist from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Allie Chipkin is a Registered Vinyasa Yoga teacher with a variegated background in songwriting, dance, poetry, Spanish, and travel. Allie first delved into yoga for the physical benefits; however, she quickly realized how meditative movement and breathwork could calm the mind and reveal to her the joy in each passing moment.
Allie loves helping students access the power of presence during her class. She infuses poetry, music, and play into each breath of her sequences. Allie intends for her students to leave feeling inspired, spacious, and, most importantly, grateful to call their bodies “home.” Namaste!
Thomas Brown is a mixed media artist and an occasional songbird. Originally from Muscle Shoals, Alabama and raised up in Louisville, Kentucky, he has now been based in New York City since 2008 working as an ice sculptor. In addition to ice sculptures, Thomas creates environmental art installations, and has collaborated on music videos with Anna and Elizabeth, Cuddle Magic, and Star Rover. Besides being the off-season manager of Three Mile Island, Dinty Child is a longtime member of the Boston roots/folk scene. A fearless multi-instrumentalist he can most often be seen with the band Session Americana, as well as the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, the unapologetically loud and grimy Catbirds, as sensitive side man to any number of singer/songwriters, including Rose Cousins and Kris Delmhorst, and even fronting the 15 piece party band, the Funky White Honkies. In 2020, he released his first solo album!

Kristin Andreassen is a singer, songwriter & percussive dancer whose music honors both the playful & the profound. She's toured with some of the most respected acoustic groups around: the stringband Uncle Earl, the "folk noir” singing trio Sometymes Why, the Appalachian clogging company Footworks, and NYC's "anti-folk" superhero Jeffrey Lewis. Her originals range from the infectious rhythms of her kids' music hit "Crayola Doesn't Make a Color for Your Eyes” to the emotive soundscape in this shadow art video made with beloved MoM instructor Anna Roberts-Gevalt. This year, Kristin released two albums. The Bright Siders’ A Mind of Your Own (Smithsonian Folkways) is a collection of children's songs about emotions, co-created with Brooklyn psychiatrist Dr. Kari Groff and a raft of guest stars. Her second pandemic-era release was the self-titled debut from JKLOL a project featuring three Miles of Music regulars — Kristin, Jefferson Hamer & Lauren Balthrop — along with their drummer pal Lawson White. An experienced teacher & square dance caller, Kristin is a true believer in the transformative power of music camps for all ages. After studying creative writing, history and community development at Montreal’s McGill University, she is stunned to have found herself in a career where she employs all three of those skills in balance.

She partnered with NYC’s Blue Balloon Songwriting School to open her own music school in Nashville where she teaches the young ones to express themselves through songwriting. Her big folk-rock band and "small town" with her brother called Balthrop, Alabama toured all across the states to a cultish following.
